Briefly share the history of your school’s Ultimate program. How it started/developed into a competitive program.
a. 1984 – 1988, consistent success at national level placing as high as #2 in the nation in 1988 under the leadership of Greg “GC” Clark and Pat “bagger” Lee. The next 5 years were led by Chris “stoney” Stone and Keith “homey” Sandel.
b. Not much happened from ‘95-’98 and then the arrival of Matt “skippy” Sewell from Oberlin college brought the beginnings of the TX Ultimate Program. Building his foundation with Scott Berens in 1999 and continuing with Brandon “chill” Hill in 2000, Chuck “diesel” Tsen in 2000 and Michael “tank” Natenberg in 2001. Creating their first B team in 2001, which eventually evolved into present day Graze, was a great challenge but since that time, UT has churned out a consistent flow of mathletes and his been a mainstay in the UPA/USAU top 8 since 2002.
c. TUFF has been lucky to count on Coach Calvin Lin since 1999 for planning and leading practices, fostering player development, and strategy. Coach Allen “C-Bag” Clement teamed up with Calvin from 2003 to 2007 to help propel TUFF onto the national stage. TUFF and many of its impact players owe Jeremiah “Banjo” Lucas for his guidance as coach of Graze from 2002 to 2007.
d. The annual CENTEX tournament has hosted the top teams in College Ultimate since 2002 and the University of Texas at Austin was honored to host the 2003 college national championships at Whittaker IM Field complex.
