Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get involved with ultimate at your school?
Katherine Lee: I began playing playing my freshman year of college mainly because my sister was on the team. After deciding not to play club soccer, ultimate seemed like the most appealing next choice.
Megan Alder: I became involved with ultimate in my high school years as a fun activity after my other sports practices. Ultimate became a necessary component of my college search and C of C was a great place to begin playing competitively
How did your team do last year? What was the highlight of your season?
Katherine and Megan: The Hobs fared pretty well last season, making it to the Southeast Regionals and finishing 13th overall. Honorable games to mention are wins over Central Florida and Williams. If Megan and I had to choose one highlight from the whole season, winning one of our home tournaments, Last Call, definitely makes the list
Who is your favorite team to play against? Tell me about a memorable game.
Katherine and Megan: The Clemson Tiger Lillies are always an engaging and competitive team to play. Last year at Chucktown Throwdown, The Hobos took the win Saturday, but Clemson rallied back and won the game on Sunday which ended in them clenching the tournament overall.
Tell me about your coach(es)/captain(s). What do they bring to your team?
Katherine and Megan: This is the first year that the Hobos have been led by a coach and Nash has been a great addition to the team. He not only has an incredible background with playing, captaining, and coaching ultimate teams, but his positive attitude and hard work mentality have really brought out the best in the Hobos so far.
What player is most likely to make a huge play as a thrower? As a receiver? On D?
Katherine and Megan: We have quite a few girls who are mastering the deep hucks, but definitely keep an eye on Amy Allen (’11) and Kahla Worley (’11). We also have some serious speed on the team, especially Molly Lofton (’12) and Jackie Weiblehauss (’14). Defensively, big plays are often made by Jackie Boyle (’11), Reagan Mann (’12), Claire Brunson (’12).
It’s easy to see when someone throws a huge huck or gets a layout D. Who’s a player you have to watch more carefully to see how valuable they are to your team?
Katherine and Megan: Heather Dolan (’13) is a player who definitely flies under the radar. Her skills and understand of the game have drastically improved over the few years that she has been a competitive player, but now with her smart throws, hard cuts, and intuitive decisions, she is quickly becoming a very valuable part of the Hobos.
Has your team set any goals for this season? What are they?
Katherine and Megan: With our new coach and more competitive attitudes, our big goal for the season is to break seed at Regionals. We will begin this process at our debut in the Athens tournament, Classic City Classic in which we will truly see how we fair against teams of national caliber. Short term goals include building a solid foundation with excellent basic skills involving a repertoire of set plays and overall athleticism.
What has your team been doing this fall to prepare for the spring season?
Katherine and Megan: This fall, we have increased conditioning and honed in on developing solid basic skills to ensure stamina and on-field confidence in tournaments to come.
What tournaments do you plan to attend in the spring? Which one are you most looking forward to?
Katherine and Megan: Right now, we are still considering a variety of tournaments for the spring. In the past we have frequented Southerns, Queen City TuneUp, and of course, our favorite Chucktown Throwdown.
What does your team do to get pumped up for a big game?
Katherine and Megan: Hobos have always taken pride in our pre-game cheers, which lend themselves to a rise in intensity and excitement in the upcoming game. A song that gets us pumped but also serves as a good descriptor of the Bums and Hobos free spirit is Toto’s “Africa.”
What do you think about the USA Ultimate College restructuring?
Katherine: I think now, due to the restructuring of the regions, a higher level of competition is what lies ahead. Teams in North Carolina and Virginia we know to be talented and we are looking forward to meeting these teams head to head.
