Saturday

The day saw ample sun and temperatures in the low 60’s, starting with very minimal wind early and picking up to a steady breeze of around 10mph gusting up to about 15mph in the afternoon. Saturday saw great Ultimate weather and enough wind to see some interesting zone play mixed in throughout most of the day.

Pool A

To say Penn State dominated the pool would probably be an understatement; they rolled through the pool giving up a total of 7 points in 4 games. The rest of the pool went pretty much to seed with the exception of Ohio-B and Delaware-B switching spots at the bottom.

Pool B

This pool saw a lot of shaking up with George Mason going 0-4 and dropping from 2^nd to 5^th in the pool. Army and Navy fought it out for the first time and Navy came out on top as the highlight of a very successful weekend, check out some of their highlights on YouTube. Wheaton came away on top of Pool B pretty easily as expected.

Pool C

This pool had a little shakeup in the middle with Liberty moving up a spot by beating VCU, but as a whole went as expected. William and Mary cruised pretty easily through all but the game with Liberty which seemed to be a zone battle the whole way.

Pool D

If you were looking for the “upsets” in pool play this is where you’d find them. Clemson looked very strong for 3 games before losing to Dickinson. That same Dickinson team went to half with Woodside HS at 7-6. Meanwhile Edinboro played up a spot by beating Messiah handily.

Sunday

The day saw on and off light mist during the first game which turned into more frequent and heavier showers as the day went on. Winds hung steady around 15mph but at times gusted well into the 20’s.

Prequarters

Edinboro and TCNJ took care of business as 3 seeds over 2 seeds meanwhile Clemson and Swarthmore did what was expected of the higher seed.

Quarters

Penn State, fresh off of sleeping in, came out and continued their dominance with an 11 point win over Edinboro. Dickinson and Wheaton also had large wins in their Quarters matchups. The game to watch was definitely the Clemson/William and Mary game. Just over a month ago W&M knocked Clemson out of the Championship bracket at the Chiefs home tournament Joint Summit, so this one had a little sense of payback for the Chiefs. This time Clemson would get the upper hand pulling off the universe point victory to move on to the Semifinals.

Semifinals

Wheaton faced Clemson in the first semi, the Chiefs extra game and hard fought win over William and Mary seemed to take its toll as Wheaton would win by 6. In the other semifinal Penn State just kept winning running away from Dickinson and having time to watch the last few points of the other semifinal.

Finals

The finals started in a light rain with a stiff breeze creating a mostly upwind/downwind game. But before long the rain picked up to a serious downpour and the wind began to really gust. I chose to stand about 200yds away under a tent rather then get saturated and give a great play by play of the game. What I did see was Penn State with better throws in the wind and seemingly winning all the 50/50 discs, which was a lot by this time. Penn State cruised in the final 11-1 in a game shortened because of the torrential rains and wind.

Congratulations to Penn State for claiming the inaugural Woodside Invite College Edition title and thanks to all the teams for participating. We look forward to having Penn State back next year to defend the title and hope to continue to expand the great highly competitive tournament we saw this past weekend. Also thanks to SAVAGEultimate for having a ton of great gear on hand and for throwing out some great freebies during games on Sunday.
