DIII Previews: Rice

Rice University’s Cloud9 made a lot of noise last year at D-III Nationals, finishing the weekend tied for third place. With a rough start at Claremont’s DIII Warmup, they had a much better season through the second half – including qualifying for this year’s D-III Nationals. With questions of repeating last year’s performance, here’s a short Q&A with Rice’s captain Sam Dubinski.

Skyd: How is this year’s roster different from last year’s? More young players? Veteran team?

Sam Dubinski:
We are a more balanced team than last year with a strong senior class.

How did your spring season go?

Due to last minute cancellations of tournaments, our spring schedule was emptier than we hoped it would be. However, we are happy with the end result.

Who’s been the team MVP this season?

Kevin Shen and Salman Eraj should be treated as team MVPs.

Does your team have a coach? If so, what benefits have you seen?

Returning south central coach of the year Drew Wendler has come back this season to help our
team.

What will be your team’s focus until Milwaukee?

Because we end school much earlier than most other universities, our goal is to make sure we all stay in shape and keep our throws sharp.

What was the most difficult game you’ve played this season? What set it apart?

The second game against Puget Sound at D3 warmup was the hardest for our team. We suffered a couple of injuries during the first day of pool play and were exhausted by this game of the tournament. Based on our first game against this team, we felt we could play with them closely, but we were just too tired and out-manned to execute.

Most teams set goals before the season – have you accomplished those goals?

The main goal of our team was to come back to nationals and yes we have proudly accomplished
this.
