Virginia v. Texas – Day 1, Round 3

The 3rd round of the day featured 11th seed Virginia versus 14th seed Texas. Both teams who had electric offenses and big defensive players who earned huge layout D’s.. The first point was the longest point of the game, and perhaps the most exciting. Virginia had the opening pull putting it deep into Texas territory. Texas was able to hit big players such as Will Driscoll and Danny Broberg up the field until Nathan Schelble got horizontal for a huge lay out D, which lead to Matt King connecting  with Alex Dagley for a ridiculous grab, and a break for Virginia. The teams traded points until Mitchell Bennett of Texas suffered an injury and Virginia was able to capitalize with a huge huck by Mathew Williams, making the score 4-2 Virginia. A few points later, Virginia decided to challenge Texas’s offense by throwing zone. With a solid cup, Virginia forced Texas to make difficult throws. Nevertheless,  a beautiful scoober by Aditya Yerrapragada was able to put Texas within 1,Virginia 7, Texas 6.Virginia took half with a pull play from Aaron Mullins to Tom Licitra in the endzone for a goal in less than 15 seconds. Virginia 8, Texas 6. Each team showed incredible athleticism, with huge throws by each team making for an exciting first half. Virginia  showed a lot of promise at their second appearance at nationals.

In the second half Virginia decided to throw its zone again, this time with more success. A huge Layout by Virginia’s  Nathan Scelble (#3) was enough for Virginia to earn another break making it 10-6 Virginia. Like any great team, Texas knew what to do and started to play  more conservatively, knowing they could not afford another turn over. Playing tight defense, Texas was able to force a bad throw, and Will Cambell of Texas did not hesitate and hit a wide-open Lance Stewart for the goal making it 12-11 Virginia. With soft cap in place, Virginia was in need of one more goal to clinch the victory. Virginia graduate and MVP Matt king was able to connect with Junior Aaron Mullins for the game winning goal making the final score Virginia 13, Texas 11. both teams showed a determination to win and a high level of energy.
