What is the makeup of Claremont this year?
Liz Duda: We have a number of people who played in high school one some capacity or another, from pickup all the way to junior worlds. More than half the team were new to the sport when they started college, but they’ve caught on fast. We’re largely freshmen and sophomores this year, with a number of juniors abroad, and we have only two (fantastic) seniors. We’re excited to see how such a young team can continue to grow in the coming years.
How did your team do last year? What was the highlight of your season?
Liz: We ended up coming in 8th at Regionals but we only brought 10 people and we all broke ourselves before the end, so it didn’t necessarily feel like a reflection of our skill. At the end of last season we were ranked 6th out of DIII schools, although we didn’t attend DIII Nationals because of logistical reasons.
Who is your favorite team to play against? Tell us about a memorable game.
Liz: We may not have a favorite team but for some reason or another we always end up playing one team way more than any other each season. Last year it was Long Beach, which was always fun. Who knows who it will be this year.
Tell us about your captains. What do they bring to your team?
Liz: We have one veteran captain and two new ones, but we have all played for a long time and know the game well. We try to make ultimate as fun as we can while still improving our game.
What player is most likely to make a huge play as a thrower? As a receiver? On D?
Liz: A likely matchup is Baken throwing to Anika deep. Rose, Bamf, and Duda are often there for the D.
It’s easy to see when someone throws a huge huck or gets a layout D. Who’s a player you have to watch more carefully to see how valuable they are to your team?
Liz: Jenya and Killer.
How does your team bring new players up to speed?
Liz: Lots of practice. And also a lot of fun hanging out.
Has your team set any goals for this season? What are they?
Liz: We want to be bitchin’.
What has your team been doing this fall to prepare for the spring season?
Liz: Recruiting big-time. We don’t have many returners this year but we’re making up for it with an awesome bunch of recruits!
What tournaments do you plan to attend in the spring? Which one are you most looking forward to?
Liz: We haven’t fully figured this out yet. We hope to get invited back to Centex, which is always a lot of fun. And of course Regionals, Sectionals, maybe even Nationals?
What song would you pick for the soundtrack to your team’s 2011 highlight video?
Liz: Dynamite by Taio Cruz
