World Games Profile: Canada

CLUB & COUNTRY EXPERIENCE:

Canada has long been one of the elite countries exercising dominance on the world stage after breaking through with the gold medal at the inaugural appearance of ultimate at The 2001 World Games.

More recently, everyone on Team Canada with the exception of Catherine Hui and Mira Donaldson competed at Worlds 2012 with Team Canada in Open, Women or Mixed. All three divisions medaled. Donaldson competed at both the 2010 and 2012 Junior Worlds in the Women’s Division. Hui played for Canada at 2008 Worlds.

Additionally, all players compete for elite Canadian touring teams that regularly qualify for the USAU Championships.

Despite all of this success, Canada in the last four years in international competition has mostly missed the finals with 2012’s Mixed team being the exception.

CANADA on O and D

Look for Adrian Yearwood to be a key handler on the D line. He tends to make smart decisions and keeps the disc moving quickly. Captain Andy Collins will rip it deep to the tall male back line of Lloyd and Lindquist.

“We will try and create one-on-one situations that give us an advantage and in order to do that, spacing is the most important offensive concept,” explains coach Cruickshank. “We will try and maximize the strengths of each player and put them in situations that best help our team succeed.”

Team Canada split games against Team USA at the monster Midwestern mixed tournament Poultry Days but won when it counted in the finals, albeit narrowly, 13-12. They would go on to repeat the feat at Potlatch several weeks later, defeating a top American group in the finals, 15-13.

Much like Team USA the Canadians like to create space and use matchups to advance the disc while on defense they will mix it up with junk zones and pressure man defense and keep an awareness of where the weaknesses are on the field.

TEAM COACHES and CAPTAINS:

  • Coach: Jeff “Shank” Cruickshank
  • Captains: Andy Collins, Anne Mercier

Cruickshank goes it alone as Coach for Team Canada as Collins and Mercier will be on the field. Shank won’t have difficulty commanding the attention of his team: he is unarguably Canada’s most successful player. His resumé includes winning Gold at The World Games in Akita in 2001, winning bronze in 2005 in Duisburg and pulling in two UPA Championships with Furious George in 2003 and 2005 (the last one with teammate Morgan Hibbert).
