How did Ghetto Force do last year? What was the highlight of your season?
Phil Brodrick: Last year we came out 5th in our section, qualifying for Regionals. Graduation for our seniors fell on Regionals, so we didn’t show a very high level of competition there, but we look forward to our growth this year.
Who is your favorite team to play against?
Phil: Right now, probably Miami – they’re close, we know the team well, and they’re a sectional rival. A recent memorable game was last year at their tournament, Boogie Nights. We played them in the semi-finals, and started off down after they pulled off a big callahan. We battled back, and won on a break point on universe, with a packed home Miami sideline. Definitely a fun win.
What does your coach bring to your team?

Phil: Our coach this year, Evan Corcoran, was a former captain of the team for 4 years. During that time, he took the team from finishing next to last at sectionals to 7th at regionals, quite a statement. Formerly a member of Forge [a former Pittsburgh team], he brings competitive club level expertise to the team.
Are there players on your team who deserve consideration for Callahan, All-Region, or Freshman of the Year? Tell me about them.
Phil: With 19 [and growing] rookies on our team this year, we will definitely have a few worth considering for FoTY. A couple of guys to watch out for are Patrick “Peaches” Kaufmann, a 6’2” rookie with a bit of youth club experience who loves big layout plays and Marky Mark Federanko, a former handle from the youth club team Impulse. For all-region, it would be tough to ignore captain Alan “Butters” Smith, who can match anyone you throw at him in the air.
What player is most likely to make a huge play as a thrower? As a receiver? On D?
Phil: Throwers to look out for are Eric “Peg” Hegedus, with his giant backhand break, and myself, Phil Brodrick, who will most likely put up a huck or 5 on any given occasion – probably to Butters, who will just make me look good. On D, sleeper Zack Kaylor will make plays you’ll never see coming on handlers and cutters alike – better watch out for the layout callahan.
It’s easy to see when someone throws a huge huck or gets a layout D. Who’s a player you have to watch more carefully to see how valuable they are to your team?
Phil: We have a veteran core that’s been playing for quite some time that provide some solid consistency in all sorts of tough situations. A couple to watch for are Pat Bello [the Great] popping into the zone, and Brian Jones making solid grabs and smart throws.
Without giving too much away, what does your team like to do on offense and on defense?
Phil: Score and layout. Much more than that defines giving it away.
Has your team set any goals for this season? What are they?
Phil: With a huge rookie squad just learning the game, we’re mainly focusing on getting out of our section at the moment. Come spring, we’ll see just how high we should set the expectation level.
What has your team been doing this fall to prepare for the spring season?
Phil: Training rookies. Our A team hasn’t gotten to do much prep work yet, as we’ve been investing literally all of our time on the new players.
What song would you pick for the soundtrack to your team’s 2011 highlight video?
Phil: Waving Flag by K’naan. What else?
